Beautiful Country Woman, c. 1732
16-1/8 x 12 in. (41.0 x 30.5 cm) Norton Simon Art Foundation A prolific painter and draftsman, Boucher excelled in cabinet-sized paintings for collectors. In this example, the subject is domesticity. While the subject of a family in an interior teeming with details recalls the tradition established by Dutch painters, the association ends there. Boucher focuses on the purely human interest of the scene. His implication is simple and direct: in such humble settings, uncomplicated happiness is easily achieved. He treats with great sympathy and delicacy the attentive mother, the daydreaming child and the younger brother who possessively holds his pet cat. The haphazard arrangement of still life elements, coupled with the artist's painterly brushwork, introduces a refreshing and charming intimacy to the domestic subject. | |||||||||
