Isadore 'Friz' Freleng (1905-1995)
Freleng simply made good cartoons, and kept making them year after year. He earned his studio three Academy Awards. Freleng's forte was musical cartoons. He animated the Pink Panther series. The diminutive and hotheaded Yosemite Sam was inspired by Freleng.

messageIsadore (Friz) Freleng, the animator who admitted a resemblance to his mustachioed creation Yosemite Sam, and who won awards for decades of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck cartoons, died Friday at the Medical Center of the University of California at Los Angeles. He was 89.

During 30 years at Warner Bros. studios, Mr. Freleng also created classic animated cartoons with Sylvester and Tweety, Porky Pig and Speedy Gonzalez. He created the Pink Panther after Warner closed its animation department in 1963.

In all, Mr. Freleng, a self-taught artist who specialized in frenetic action, worked on more than 300 cartoons.

He won Academy Awards for four of his Warner Bros. cartoons: "Tweety Pie" in 1947, "Speedy Gonzalez" in 1955, "Birds Anonymous" in 1957 and "Knighty Knight Bugs" in 1958. He won another Oscar for "The Pink Phink," which featured the Pink Panther.
