|Eugene Boudin (1824-1898)
Eugene Boudin was born at Honfleur, Normandy.
He was a marine painter who painted outdoors.
In 1857 Boudin met Claude Monet who spent several months working directly with Boudin in his studio.
He exhibited at the Salons, receiving a third place medal at the Salon of 1881, and a gold medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle.
In 1892 Boudin was made a knight of the Légion d'honneur.

While Boudin's figures may be casually and spontaneously arranged, they are in fact part of a carefully controlled composition. Even the umbrellas, by their placement and color, carry the eye back on a diagonal through the composition.
