Two men in a canoe with a small bear cub chained to its bow. They are on a glassy yellowish river, the banks of which are both rocky and forested. A pale blue sky with a few white clouds comprises the top half of the composition. The atmosphere looks hazy.

George Caleb Bingham (1811-1879)
George Caleb Bingham was Born in Virginia, Bingham's family moved to Missouri when he was eight years old. His work depicts American life in the frontier lands along the Missouri River. He was a professor of art at the University of Missouri.
